Vision

To be a lead model conservancy in the Tsavo Conservancy Area (TCA) for the benefit of the shareholders and community.

Mission

To maximise sustainable utilization of available resources in ranching, wildlife and nature-based enterprises for improved social, economic and environmental wellbeing of shareholders and community.

Our Journey

A story of transition and collaboration

1. Formation

Maungu Ranching Company was formed and incorporated in the 1972 by representatives from the then larger Mbololo location consisting of five regions: Mraru, Tausa, Ndome, Ghazi and Wongonyi. They were allocated land in Maungu area by the leadership at the time—hence the name Maungu.

2. Relocation

The ranch was later relocated to the current location because the Sagalla people wanted a Ranch closer to its people. Hence Sagalla and Maungu Ranches were swapped, but the name Maungu was retained to preserve our founding roots.

3. Governance

At turn of the new millennium, the shareholders, through their elected directors, managed to acquire land title, renew the land lease, and setup basic governance structures—to enable the ranch to ensure the long-term success of the ranch in operating at the complex intersection of sustainable livestock production, wildlife conservation and community development.

4. Management Plan

In 2022, the Maungu Wildlife Conservancy Integrated Management Plan (2022 to 2031) was launched to enhance land use productivity through biodiversity conservation. Despite the challenges over the years, Maungu’s shareholding has grown to a remarkable membership of 2,800 of local community members.
